CNC Level 1

This course is an introduction to computer numerical control (CNC) of machine tools. It covers CNC programming with emphasis on the development of tool paths, program code (G-code), cutting parameters, program organization and the programming process. Simulations in addition to hands-on laboratory machining assignments are used to facilitate learning.
Course Objective:
The student is expected to achieve a working knowledge of CNC milling operations including development of Gcode programs, machine setup, and user interface operation.
Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course students will be able to:
1. Correctly utilize vocabulary and terminology associated with CNC machines and programming
2. Identify the major components of a CNC system.
3. Describe the various types of milling operations.
4. Identify different types of milling tools.
5. Identify machinable part features from a product drawing and plan a CNC program to produce those
features.
6. Create and edit CNC programs utilizing the word address format (G-code) for milling machine operations
according to job specifications, dimensions, and tolerances.
7. Input, edit and verify a G-code programs utilizing the Haas Control (user interface).
8. Identify and understand similarities and differences between the Haas and Kinetic controls (user interfaces).
9. Input Haas CNC mill setup parameters into the control prior to machining.
10. Safely machine parts on a Haas CNC mill.
Method of Instruction:
Class time will be spent reviewing topics as indicated followed by hands-on demonstrations and activities to
strengthen knowledge retention of concepts learned. A certification exam will conclude the course.
This 24-hour course will be taught in three (3) – eight (8) hour classes at the University of Akron’s CNC Machining lab.
