PLC Programming Level III


Course Description:
The PLC Programming (PLC Level III) Course is the third of four courses in the PLC Certification series of courses. This course specifically targets Maintenance Technicians and Engineers who are tasked with maintenance, troubleshooting, improvement, and/ or development of equipment and processes that utilize Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs). The course covers PLC Ethernet/IP, Studio 5000 Projects vs RSLogix Micro/500, Setting Ethernet/IP Address on Windows 10, Memory and Project Organization, Introduction to State Logic Programming, Project Tasks, Programs, Routines and Tags, general PLC Programming Guidelines, and Add-On Instructions. Hands-on laboratory exercises utilizing Allen-Bradley PLCs and software are utilized to facilitate learning.

Course Objective:                                                                                                                                    

Individuals successfully completing this course will be able to develop an RSLogix Studio 5000 project (program) to satisfy a given machine operating specification. This will encompass the ability to develop a PLC program directly from a narrative description, identify and specify the appropriate PLC hardware for a given application, and write efficient ladder logic programs utilizing RSLogix Studio 5000 software per standard programming procedures.

Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course students will be able to:
1. Creating and Organizing a Studio 5000 Logix Designer Project
2. Programming Methodologies
3. Creating Periodic and Event Tasks
4. Developing add-on instructions, organizing arrays, and creating user-defined data types
5. Entering, editing, and verifying ladder logic in Studio 5000
6. Handling major faults in Logix 5000 controllers
7. Managing Studio 5000 project files
8. Updating firmware

Prerequisites:
o Ability to perform basic Microsoft Windows Tasks
o Knowledge of common PLC terms and operation
o Ability to write basic ladder logic with common instructions such as bit, timer, counter, move, and comparison instructions

Method of Instruction: Class time will be spent reviewing topics as indicated followed by hands-on demonstrations and activities to strengthen knowledge retention of concepts learned. A certification exam will conclude the course. This 24-hour course will be taught in three (3) - eight (8) hour classes at The University of Akron (or onsite).
