Introduction to Addictions: CDCA Training Part 1

Course description
An overview of the continuum of use, abuse and dependency; theories of addiction; the impact of addiction on society; and the implications for professional practice.
Learning outcomes:
a. Identify key issues and acquire basic knowledge of addiction, prevention, and treatment
b. Compare and contrast the major theories of alcohol and other drug abuse
c. Understand the importance of professionalism and ethical practice
d. Satisfy the educational requirements for the Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA) credential through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board

John M Ellis LISW-S, LICDC-CS
John is a Professor of Instruction in and the Addiction Curriculum Coordinator at the University of Akron. He has 38 years' experience in the field of addictions and mental health. His academic and curriculum focus is on addictions/mental illness, integrated healthcare, evidence-based interventions, workforce development, and clinical supervision. He is a former Chair of the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board, a current member of their education committee.

Other roles have included:

• Clinical Director County Alcohol Drug and Mental Health Services Boards (ADAMHS/ADAS);
• Direct Service Provider of Treatment and Counseling for persons struggling with addictions & mental illness in hospital, jail, outpatient agency and private practice settings.
• Launched a Collegiate Recovery Community at the University of Akron.
