This class will offer an in depth, hands on approach to the art of Forcible Entry. It will cover the basics of the "Gap, set, force" technique, as well as expand on it with real world scenarios. Attendees will practice skills on forcible entry simulators, including confined space forcible entry, and low/zero visibility techniques. On scenes where seconds count, don't be delayed by poor forcible entry skills.
The Save Your A.S.S. (ADVANCED SURVIVAL SKILLS) course will give you a greater understanding of firefighter survival hands on skills, terminology, developing a survival attitude, increasing situational awareness, and being trained in problem-solving techniques so you can become more self-reliant in an emergency. The skills covered include:
SCBA Emergency Procedure Check
Calling a Mayday
Reading Couplings
Window Hangs
Hose Slides
Emergency Ladder Escape
Entanglement Emergencies; Remove SCBA
Wall Breach
SCBA confidence course
Class will meet on Oct. 4, 2021 from 0800 to 1600 hours (extra time if needed after class)
Lunch will be provided.
Required Equipment: Turnout gear, SCBA, water bottle.
Prerequisite: Participants must get a Chief or Training Officer's approval prior to the start of class.

Matt Claflin
I have been an active member in the fire service for 10 years. My career began with the Uniontown and Lakemore Fire Departments on a volunteer and part-time basis. During that time I became certified as a State of Ohio Level II Firefighter and Paramedic. I hold an Associates Degree in Fire Science as well as an Associates of Emergency Fire Services. My professional firefighting career began with the City of Ashland Division of Fire. I am currently employed as a professional Firefighter/Medic with the City of Akron Fire Department. I am stationed out of number 4 house and assigned to the Hazardous Materials team as a Haz-Mat technician. I also hold the rank of Lieutenant with the Lakemore Fire Department and currently oversee the Training and Fire division.Shawn Faust
