Course Description:
The PLC Troubleshooting (PLC Level II) Course is the second of four courses specifically targeting Maintenance Technicians and Engineers who are tasked with maintenance, troubleshooting, improvement, and/or development of equipment and processes that utilize Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs). The course covers PLC Troubleshooting Procedures, Troubleshooting Tools, PLC Status Indicator lights, Identifying and Resolving System Faults, Standard I/O wiring practices, I/O Terminal Behavior, Program Control Instructions, Data Manipulation and Compare Instructions, and Math Instructions. Hands-on laboratory exercises utilizing Allen-Bradley PLCs and software are utilized to facilitate learning.
Course Objective:
Individuals successfully completing this course will apply their knowledge of PLC hardware, PLC programming software, ladder logic programming, discrete and analog I/O devices, and basic HMI programming to the maintenance, major troubleshooting, minor program modification, and repair of PLC controlled equipment.
Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course students will be able to:
1. List and describe specific PLC troubleshooting procedures
2. Read and understand program flow in a ladder logic program
3. Identify and relate specific I/O addresses to physical components
4. Interpret controller LED status light indicators
5. Utilize programming software to monitor the PLC I/O and aid in the troubleshooting process.
6. Identify system faults
7. Identify I/O faults
8. Clear faults
9. Identify power supply issues
10. Force on inputs and outputs to aid in troubleshooting
Prerequisites:
o Ability to perform basic Microsoft Windows Tasks
o Knowledge of common PLC terms and operation
o Prior exposure to PLCs in the field Method of Instruction:
Class time will be spent reviewing topics as indicated followed by hands-on demonstrations and activities to strengthen knowledge retention of concepts learned. A certification exam will conclude the course. This 24-hour course will be taught in three (3) - eight (8) hour classes at The University of Akron (or onsite).
