Anyone working and entering excavations and trenching are required to receive excavation and trenching safety training. This course will cover the basic methods and techniques of using hand excavation tools, as well as review and discuss the OSHA safety standards of a competent person under 29 CFR 1926 for excavation and trenching. The course will teach students about the various hazards in trenching and excavation, as well as methods and techniques for using hand tools in excavation. By the end of this class, students will walk away with the ability to inspect work sites for safety hazards, preplan for excavations, identify basic soil types, and excavate with hand tools efficiently and safely. Ultimately, the goal of this class is to save lives, backs, time, and money while on the work site.

- OHSA safety standards per 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P, 29 CFR 1926.650-652, and Appendices A through F
- Identify and distinguish between various hand excavation tools
- Proper techniques and methods for excavation using hand tools
- How to evaluate a dig site for safe entrance, egress, staging, and hazards
- The different types of hazards in excavation, such as cave-ins, personnel tripping and falling, equipment staging, water accumulation, structural stability, electrical shock, and hazardous atmospheres
- How to identify basic differences in soil types
